Victorian Times Camp During the Victorian Times Camp, the participants will be transported back in time to the 1800’s Civil War Era by wearing Victorian costumes and participating in Victorian crafts and activities. All participants will be assigned a pair of pantaloons, a hoop skirt, a beautiful satin overskirt, faux fur stole, hat & gloves to wear during their week at camp!
The Victorian Era was one of the most colorful time periods (both light and dark) in American History. The 19th Century was a period of elegance for some and a time of great suffering for others. At Victorian Times camp, we will explore the life styles of the different classes of people living in that era. We will have tea time daily to give the young ladies an opportunity to learn proper etiquette while enjoying a delicious snack! We will sample a variety of teas from different parts of the world. The girls will learn aVictorian fan language. With the "flip of a fan", a Victorian young lady could communicate a message across the room without speaking a word! Now, not all young ladies during the Victorian Era enjoyed tea time and parlor games. There were many people much less fortunate. At camp, we will discuss many courageous people fighting for freedom from slavery such as: Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, William Still, and other abolitionists. We will role-play an UGRR (Underground Railroad) experience searching for a "safe house". We will read a museum replica copy of President Abraham Lincoln’s famous Emancipation Proclamation written in his own handwriting. There were many famous people that lived during the Victorian Era that contributed to the shaping of America and the World. We will explore the lives’ of women such as: Queen Victoria, Louisa May Alcott, Clara Barton, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and Emily Dickenson. We will look at some of the art work of Mary Cassatt and other French Impressionist Artists that lived during this era (Manet, Seurat, Van Gogh, Monet, Renoir).
The girls will learn how to embroider a cross-stitch cloth sampler. They will also learn how to color tint fashion plates and make a Victorian handkerchief “quiet” doll. The girls will learn how to play a variety of parlor games. They will learn an Early American partner dance. Lastly, the young ladies will participate in an end of the week "Reflections" performance. This will be a time where the girls can share what they have learned during their week at the Victorian Times.
Camp will include a 5 x 7 group photo, a 5 x 7 individual photo, a Book of Reflections (scrapbook) of their activities,an embroidery sampler framed, daily teatime, and a full afternoon tea service on the last day of camp.
