Decades Day Camp
Girls ages 7 - 12 will be invited to experience the last 10+ decades to see how the world has changed! They will be assigned an era costume to wear during their week at camp: 1920's Flappers, or 1950's Car Hop, Soda Jerk or Poodle Skirt outfits, or 1960's Hippies or Woodstock Flower Child, or 1970's Disco Girls, or 1980's Grunge Rocker.
"The Decades" camp will examine life from the 1900's - 2012! The girls will be given a "Teddy Bear"
and they will learn the story behind the teddy bear. The girls and their bears will role play the immigrant journey from distant lands by ship to the New York Harbor with Lady Liberty welcoming these weary travelers through Ellis Island.
Girls will examine how life started to shake up...first with the San Francisco earthquake in 1906 and then with the first World War. Women held their first suffragist parade in 1910 and the 19th ammendment allowing women the right to vote in 1919. Girls and their bears will hold a mock suffragist parade!
The roaring 20's brought "The Flapper Age" an prohibition and "speakeasies" (illegal taverns that sold alcohol...to enter a speakeasy it required a password, secret knock or handshake). At camp, girls will learn a 1920's Charleston dance and create a secret code to role play entrance into a faux speakeasy to sip a soda!
The "Dirty 30's" was so named because of the Dust Bowl. The 1940's brought World War II and the end of the Great Depression. Women replaced men in the workplace because men had to go off to war. The 40's were a time of rations, Victory gardens, "Rosie Riveter" (women working), and the inventions of the TV dinners! Girls will make a mini Victory Garden.
The 50's brought the end of WWII and fads such as: "drive-in" movies, blue jeans, poodle skirts, saddle shoes, car hops and soda jerks...and Rock n Roll! Music was dominated by Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis & Buddy Holly. Black and white television began to replace the radio. At camp, girls will learn the jitterbug dance and will make a poodle skirt for their bears.
The 60's brought flower power, skateboards, surfers, Barbie dolls, go-go boots, mini skirts..and drugs became the norm. Anti-war protests against the Vietnam War and civil rights protests for integration not segregation of black and white people...all contributed to this era of turmoil. The Space Race allowed the first man to walk on the moon. At camp, girls will make 60's accessories for their bears.
The 70's brought advances in civil rights, concern for the environment and increased space exploration. Fads: mood rings, lava lamps, smiley faces, bell bottom pants, platform shoes and pet rocks! The floppy disc appeared in 1970 and Star Wars! At camp, girls will make a trend from the 70's...their own Pet Rock!
The 80's were typified by Me! Me! Me!...a generation of status seekers. "If you've got it, flaunt it!" and "Shop 'til you drop!" Fads were: video games, minivans, camcorders and talk shows.
The 90's brought the electronic age. The World Wide Web was born in 1992, which changed the way we communicate (email) and how we spend our money (online) and how we do business (e-commerce). Trends: amazon.com, Oprah Winfrey's Book Club, grunge, and hip hop became popular.
The new millennium 2000 - 2012 created a technological pace that has us all running to keep up. Lastly, a major historical event occurred in the 2009 President Election. Barack Obama was elected our first African American President of the United States of America.

Fee: $225 plus tax Camp Includes: costuming for the week, all craft supplies, scrapbook, Teddy Bear with accessories made by the girls, 5 x 7 group and 5 x 7 individual photo of the girls, scrapbook, snacks daily.
